What is a Marine Surveyor?
These days our waterways can wind up getting just as congested as our highways. With all of the products that we have imported and exported back and forth, it is difficult to keep up with what is safe to allow to pass through. Just as there are designated weight stations on the interstate to control the flow of traffic cargo, so are there also individuals who search through marine cargo. The people that perform this type of work are referred to as Marine Surveyors. Their job is to carry out inspections on marine vessels and their freight to ensure that both are safe for passage.
Education For Marine Surveyors Interested people who wish to pursue a career in this field receive their training in a number of ways. The sole source however is done through military training of the branch of Marines, so the courses taken for this position are set up according to military education standards. There are refresher courses that can be taken by seasoned veterans of the field but those actual courses are taken in the form of seminars, or are administered by other seasoned individuals who run their own private schools to teach the field. As far as the courses are concerned, the subjects include math, English, and even classes in marine biology and micro-biology. For most, taking the refresher courses will give them a better chance at being more compatible for joining a particular association of Marine Surveyors such SAMS.
SAMS This stands for the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors Inc. It is headquartered at the International Maritime Technical Institute In Brunswick, Maine and was founded by Jim Robbins and Fred Lowe in 1987. Following tradition, the society holds court for only 50 members at a time and is intending to enroll only those individuals who take the utmost pride in their duties as a Marine Surveyor. These Accredited Marine Surveyors are people who have maintained their technical skills over the course of time for the right to earn the title of "Marine Surveyor".
The SAMS group does, however offer positions for those serious applicants who are less qualified by placing them in short-termed programs closer to home. The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors takes its roll very literally in the principles and values that it instills in each of its members and is routinely looking for people who have a desire to maintain an heir of professionalism in their chosen field. Here are the programs that are offered by SAMS to qualifying applicants. The Society has 3 programs that are available to qualifying individuals.
*AMS - Accredited Marine Surveyor *SA - Survey Associate *AFF - Affiliate Member
Requirements for Fully Accredited Marine Surveyors: To qualify for this program, the candidate must have at least 5 years of Marine Surveyor experience that have been acquired within the last 10 years of that person's career life. The exception to this rule is if the candidate in question has had prior experience within another marine related field. The decision to qualify said applicant for membership will be made by the elder members of the Committee, or by the Board of Directors. Also, all applicants must be able to confirm that they can uphold the By-laws Code of Ethics, standards, and expectations of their superior committee members.
A completed application with attached resume is required of all the candidates in order to even be considered by the Society and there is also a written exam to be taken by all applicants upon arrival as per the Committee. Lastly, each candidate must agree to participate in all the required activities and exercises of enrollment as noted by the Education Committee and the Board of Directors.
Requirements for Survey Associates: These are individuals who do not yet meet the qualifications of an Accredited Marine Surveyor. However, these individuals must also agree to adhere to the Code of Ethics as befits the SAMS Board of Directors. They must complete an application and attach a full resume for consideration into the Society and must also comply to participate in all of the said activities and exercises as well.
Requirements for an Affiliate Member: Participants should currently be running a business, or a group of people that provide a product or a service to the Marine profession. Qualifying people to this field must comply with the Code of Ethics as it pleases the Committee and the Board of Directors.
